Analog selfie filters (2021) Installation, mixed technic / 170x120x100cm, 250×150×220cm, 170×90×25cm, 150×80×50cm
The installation consists of four sculptures. Each sculpture represents a type of selfie filter. Analog selfie filters are images derived from software and physical gadgets used for one of the most popular genres of contemporary photography. They are a software defect translated into a sculpture. The error refers to the filter's failure, a glitch, when the detection algorithms fail to recognise the subject of the photograph and the real face behind the filter is momentarily revealed. Instead of being active, they lose their purpose of altering the image and are merely placed on the screen of the front camera, or mirror. They are freed from the bondage of adaptation. They stand independently on pedestals without the need for human support. From mistakes, new possibilities are often born. In each of the four elements, the mirror is the front camera, combining mirror and photography capabilities on our phones. Each mirror has its own base, a construction that converts into a selfie stick. Each mirror is assigned a selfie filter - a golden dog-like animal mask that references the Snapchat filter of the 2010s¸ two embellishing filters that represent attributes assigned to the female gender; and a Zoom wallpaper consisting of a poster facing the mirror and a flower standing between them. |
